  • 1.  Assigned Attorney Panel?

    Hello All,

I hope everyone is well. I am new to New Jersey Family Law, and I was just wondering if there is an assigned attorney panel here in NJ similar to the 18B panel in New York?  I've looked everywhere, and so I'm doubtful.  However,  maybe I'm missing something?  It seems that there are only opportunities for attorneys to volunteer in the courts.  Am I correct?

That's correct - never heard of an "18B panel" or similar here.

If you're looking for volunteer opportunities, they abound. Contact the PJ in your county and ask when the next bench-bar meeting is, and go.

Feel free to ask any questions here. Nothing's too basic nor too advanced. Worst case scenario, no one can take the time to respond -- but no one will hold asking against you.

We do have private counsel appointments in both Criminal  and Family Court. In family court those appointments pertain to guardianship and other cases involving children primarily. All of those appointments go through the local  public defenders office.

You become a "pool attorney" for the Public Defender's Office.  You have to apply and go through a whole process.  You are, in effect, becoming a state vendor.  Lots of paperwork.  The pay is $50/hr. for out of court and $60/hr. for in court.  Representing parents in termination of parental rights cases gets you an exemption from a Madden appointment you can claim on your yearly registration.  Difficult work, but at least on the child welfare side, the opportunity to help define and shape the law.  Lots of statutory interpretation, evidence, and due process issues.
