Alternative to Easy Soft for CIS program?

  • 1.  Alternative to Easy Soft for CIS program?

    Posted 02-10-2016 12:10 PM

Easy Soft is increasing my fees with them by 300%.  They are trying to justify it by bundling their programs into a package that includes things I do not remotely need.

Does anyone else use an alternative CIS/Child Support Calculation program or are they the only game in town?

Seriously, for the amount they charge for this software every year, it should be a lot better than it is. Specifically, I'm told that the long delays (hourglass display) while it's processing (and I have a pretty quick computer) is indicative of poorly written code, the fact that it can't do split custody (1 child with mom, 1 with dad) - even if that meant producing a couple of worksheets, that it can't do 50/50, that it doesn't inquire whether tax exemptions are being divided and take that into account, why none of the packages can use Optical Charectar Recognition (OCR) technology (from PDF's or scanner) and read an old CSG worksheet and grab the information off of it (or, hell, why not scan a paystub or tax return and have it grab the information off of those), that it can't spit out a Title IV-D order even though some judge's chambers (e.g., Somerset) are requesting them... Those are off the top of my head, I'm sure there's more.

Lot of gripes. Between the needed improvements and bugs, it's a little frustrating. I almost switched to EasySoft a couple of years ago, but you can't convert the .CIS data file (and, of course, no OCR reading to just scan an old CIS or CSG worksheet).

I think there's a killing to be made here for some new software company to come out with a zippy new program that does everything, OCR reads and/or converts data, etc.

If there's a package anyone's happy with, I'd love to hear about it.

Hello Listmates:  I've used Family Law Software (FLS) for years and am very happy with not only their products but also their customer service.   Please contact Mark Rogers, of FLS, at 215-766-9475, to confirm that their software does perform the following calculations:  split and 50/50 custody, splits tax exemptions, produces the "IV-D order" as well as extrapolates for high incomes!  FLS also has a tool for side-by-side support scenarios.

    <<If anyone has anything specific>>.....

For $250 (maybe $299, but I can't see more than that) per year (do the math on how many attorneys buy it - if only 10% did, that's $275,000 per year being paid -- and it's more than 10% who would buy it), the software should do everything we need it to.

    Specifically:
<x-tab>        </x-tab>1 - It should run well (no long delays / no "hourglasses" when switching between pages)
    <x-tab>        </x-tab>2 - Split custody
    <x-tab>        </x-tab>3 - 50/50 custody
<x-tab>        </x-tab>4 - Inquire whether tax exemptions are being divided and take that into account
<x-tab>        </x-tab>5 - Optical Charectar Recognition (OCR) (from PDF's or scanner) and read an old CIS / CSG worksheet and grab the information off of it
<x-tab>        </x-tab>6 - OCR and grab the information from a paystub and fill out (or at least suggest subject to verification) the related CIS (YTD info)
    <x-tab>        </x-tab>7 - Title IV-D orders
<x-tab>        </x-tab>8 - Clients should be able to fill out documents by being sent a link to a secure online form
<x-tab>        </x-tab>9 - A nice bonus I haven't seen would be the ability to redact documents. Scan them to PDF and the software (especially since it's usually in the same place on everything - like tax returns) should be able to print them with SS and Account numbers blacked out.
<x-tab>        </x-tab>10 - At least ballpark tax calculations on alimony (taking into account deductions, whether party intends to buy a new home and will have mtg interest deduction)
<x-tab>        </x-tab>11 - Info on liquidating retirement accounts and what net would be
    <x-tab>        </x-tab>12 - App / mobile access
    <x-tab>        </x-tab>13 - I'm sure there's more....

The Family Law software used in other states (Colorado, I believe) does the above, especially the OCR stuff, which is a huge time saver.

FLS sounds better than EasySoft - anyone know if they can convert the data files (.CIS files) from EasySoft? (Of course, if it's OCR, there's no need to convert a data file, just scan an old sheet)

But really, if there's no company that does all of this, maybe we should crowdsource / kickstarter hiring someone?

    Laura:

What is Easy Soft trying to bundle other than the CIS program? I know it has a program called Divorce financials that has been out for quite some time, but they have never made it mandatory to purchase that to have their CIS program, to my knowledge.

I have used Easy Soft per year and we only pay the annual license fees for the actual easy Soft programs that our firm uses.

Ditto, Bobby – I've worked with Easy Soft for a long time and have always been pleased with their products. I'm particularly fond of Divorce Financials, in which you can do various scenarios for alimony and child support proposals to show the bottom line net of tax, and that ain't all.

As George of EasySoft advised me, they are now bundling Divorce Financials and one other program with the CIS package at $588 per year!  You cannot purchase it any other way.  Like Laura, I am not happy.

It's getting a little expensive for that program and they make us buy stuff we don't need or request. I think if more people notify them that were looking at other programs, they may reconsider. However, if we don't say anything and continue to be "led like sheep etc etc" they will charge the $588 or anything they think they can.

We use Easy Soft CIS as well.  However, we also use Easy Trust for our trust accounting.  Easy Soft has sold off that product to Cosmolex who is now doing away with it so everyone uses their new "cloud" program and they won't be servicing the old program any longer so we have no choice but to switch.  We only use it basically as a ledger for our trust clients.  I do not use any other features of the program.  They (Cosmolex) will charge over $500 to convert my current program to their new cloud based program which, again, we do not need...and it also has many many features we will never use!  So either we make the switch and use 1/8th of the program or I have to find a new program!  It's a conspiracy!!  If anyone has a simple trust accounting program they can recommend, it would be appreciated.

$588 a year? Yeah, I'm done too, regardless of whether new software reads their data files. There's got to be a better one out there.

Or one of us with an unemployed or hungry software engineer who wants to make a program with all the bells and whistles I mentioned? I can't believe it would be that much of a challenge...

I had a similar experience with Intuit payroll.  I got a notice that the renewal bill would be $588 or so but when all was said and done I paid less than $400.  Maybe they use the same billing company as Easy Soft.

I use Family Law Software.  They have great customer support, about $50 per month, update regularly, have a sophisticated program with all the bells and whistles.  Not sure why they aren't as big here as in the NY market.  I'd love to know other peoples experience with Family Law Software.

Just had the same thing happen to me on February 1st when my software expired.  It seems that Easy-Soft has been sold and is now price gouging.  I use the HUD-1 program, but did not need their real estate documents.  It is now part of the "bundle" aka more expensive version.  It seems to me that because Easy-Soft is a program that not only advertises in NJ Lawyer Magazine and the website, it offers a discount to 1st time NJSBA members, we should be able to voice our concerns with the NJSBA.  To the uninformed it would appear that Easy-Soft is an "approved" product.

    Any thoughts?

The "bundle" that Easy Soft now wants to make me pay for is not just the CIS software and Divorce Financials (both of which I have now), but also Pennsylvania forms (I don't practice there), NY forms (I don't practice there either) and real estate documents (oh hell no).

So rather than letting us just keep paying for the CIS program and Divorce Financials, they are tripling our fees and trying to justify it by pointing out all of these other things I will now have that I didn't previously have.  Things I will never want.  And we have 5 attorneys in our firm, so the dramatic increase in cost for each license totaled to well over $3K per year.  (I left my notes with the exact figure at the office . . .  Or maybe I burned them.)

I switched to familylaw software. $24.95 per month for the basic program (which is enough if you do not need the tax analysis and property division analysis) and they have a basic app for free, but it is worthless without the health insurance and union  dues, etc. inputs (like Easy Soft's).

I use  DivorceWare and have been happy with it, I found EasySoft to be difficult to use.

I know nothing about the costs, really.  But I do know that supposedly NJSBA members get a 20% discount from ES.

Yes, but even with the discount, I was told that the monthly fee for 2 users for Easy Soft was $47, whereas the Familylaw software cost for 2 users (or as many users as I need) is $24.95 per month. I tried to get Easy Soft to match or come close, but they are bundling it with the HUD real estate program which I do not need, so the cost for me was almost twice what familylaw was charging.

I referenced Family Law Software by a different name early in this thread. This is the product my firm has used for many years and we recommend it.

Yes, Family Law Software has an app, at least for the iPhone, and I assume for the iPad, but I only have it in my iPhone.

    Posted 02-12-2016 10:23 AM

    Good morning All,

My renewal is not due until September so I have not seen the increase notice. However, based on the info from the group that the increase is apparently due to non-sensical bundling, I contacted EasySoft (which I am pretty sure merged with FamilySoft years ago).

I spoke to billing who passed me along to someone in the executive office. I hinted at the far reach of our massive e-community (we have by far the largest and most active e-community in the NJSBA) and the probable mass exodus about to occur in the near future if the bundling continued.

The gentleman there was very interested in what the average family law practitioner needs "bundled". Since that call an hour ago I have received three calls from various other EasySoft peeps.

    To be continued…

I had a lovely conversation with the guy who built the program sold through NJICLE.

Art Lieberman created his program, Divorceware NJ, in response to the kind of nonsense that we now face.

    his website: http://www.divorcewarenj.com/

Does anyone have experience with his product?

Yes-  I thought I already posted information about his product.  I have been using it quite successfully- no iPhone access though, but Art may be able to work on that.
