Retired Chief Appellate Court Judge and Former Acting Supreme Court Justice Edwin H. Stern to address April 19th Criminal Law Section dinner meeting

Good afternoon everyone-
       On behalf of John J. Smith, Jr., Chair of the Criminal Law Section and myself, I am honored to announce that Retired Chief Appellate Court Judge and Former Acting Supreme Court Justice Edwin H. Stern will be addressing the NJSBA Criminal Law Section dinner meeting on Thursday, April 19th, commencing at 6:00 P.M.
      Judge Stern will be discussing the 15 most important cases and statutes that have affected the practice of criminal law in the State of New Jersey in the last 30 years. (For those of you who would like to know more about Judge Stern, I have included his biography, below in this email.)
      You will be able to obtain 1.8 CLE credits for attending this presentation. The cost for attendance is $38.00 with CLE credits; and, $23.00 without CLE credits. A delicious hot buffet dinner is included.

Edwin H. Stern joins Gibbons as Counsel upon completing his temporary assignment to the New Jersey Supreme Court from September 8, 2010 until his mandatory retirement in June 2011.

Mr. Stern began his judicial career in 1981 when he was appointed to the bench by then-Governor Brendan T. Byrne. He served in the Superior Court Law Division in Hudson County and Essex County before he was elevated to the Appellate Division in 1985. In 1998, Judge Stern became the presiding judge in the Appellate Division and then, in 2004 became the Presiding Judge for Administration of the Appellate Division.

Over the course of his judicial career, Judge Stern authored more than 3,000 opinions including more than 400 published opinions. He was on many Supreme Court committees including serving as the Judicial representative on the New Jersey Sentencing Commission and the Commission on Professionalism in the Law. He taught at the New Jersey Judicial College since 1974; gave the Weintraub lecture at Rutgers Law School - Newark in 2008; gave lectures at various law schools; and has written many articles including law review articles in the Rutgers Law School - Newark and Camden Law Reviews.

In the mid-1970s, Mr. Stern chaired the Supreme Court’s first Task Force on Juvenile Justice and was a member of the committee that drafted the present Rules of Evidence. From 1988 to 2011, he chaired the Criminal Practice Committee. On the national stage, Mr. Stern is a member of the Council of Chief Judges of Courts of Appeal (CCJSCA). He was chair of the CCJSCA Administration of Justice Committee and a member of its Executive Committee. He is currently a member of the American Law Institute.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, Mr. Stern was in private practice and served as First Assistant and Acting Prosecutor in Hudson County. He also served as Director of Criminal Practice and Assistant Director for Legal Services in the Administrative Office of the Courts and worked in the Department of Law and Public Safety, where he became Deputy Attorney General in charge of Appellate Litigation in the Division of Criminal Justice and was actively involved in the drafting and implementation of the Code of Criminal Justice (Title 2C).
