Speaker: Mark Curriden Contempt of Court: A Lynching and Two Lawyers Made Legal History and Forever Changed the Practice of Law Join us for a discussion of how a lynching case changed the practice of law. Award-winning author and journalist Mark Curriden shares the story of a Supreme Court case that shaped the legal profession, created the modern day habeas corpus practice and provided the legal profession with two heroes whose commitment to law, justice and their clients should be heralded. The case involved a young black man falsely accused of rape who was railroaded through the justice system, two African-American lawyers who helped him, and the first successful federal habeas corpus action in a state criminal case, claiming that their client’s rights to due process and equal protection under the U.S. Constitution had been violated. The day will also feature an update on the New Jersey State Bar Association's Strategic Diversity Plan and an opportunity to network with colleagues at a reception.
