2015 The Law Of Funerals

When:  Oct 30, 2015 from 01:00 PM to 04:30 PM (ET)
FROM THE HEADLINES

    • According to USA Today, until they were caught in 2006, a funeral home in Brooklyn, NY illegally harvested body parts and sold them to surgery centers throughout the country. Hundreds of patients in New Jersey received unsafe, tainted and illegal body parts as a result.

The long-term legal fall out for both the victims and families of the deceased remain to be seen.

    • A July 22nd, 2015 article in the Star Ledger brought to light an ongoing debate between a cemetery in Colonia, NJ and plot owners facing a myriad of restrictions regarding two plots they owned. The paper’s advice to its readers was simply “Make sure you understand all the rules and restrictions if you buy space at a cemetery, and be sure your heirs know the rules, too.”

The last published state statistics indicate that there are approximately 821 deaths per 100,000 residents in New Jersey each year.

With over 70,000 total deaths annually, there are bound to be a wide variety of issues surrounding funerals and other end of life concerns in New Jersey.

This seminar will address funeral and burial law including the right to control human remains, issues that occur beyond the burial like who owns the graves and who inherits them, pre-need funeral planning and its impact on estate planning, and regulation of the funeral industry.

Don’t miss this new program that frankly and compassionately addresses issues concerning funeral law, including:
• Designated Funeral Representative
• Changes in the right to control effected by U.S. v. Windsor and Obergefell et.al. v. Hodges
• Disinterments v. Interments - digging up the truth
• Who “owns” the grave after death and who else can be buried there?
• Family disputes - where do we put Uncle Fester?
