The New Jersey State Bar Association is sharing information from around the legal community about how members can volunteer their services or receive additional training to help families who were separated at the border.
The New Jersey Consortium for Immigrant Children assembled information about how people can find volunteer opportunities to help immigrant children, and the families who were separated. You can see their full list here.
On July 17, An Introduction to Representing Unaccompanied Children in Immigration Matters, will be presented by Kids In Need of Defense and the Child Advocacy Clinic. The 90-minute session will start at 10 a.m. and be held at Rutgers Law School, 123 Washington St., Newark.
This training will provide an overview of the basics of removal proceedings for children and an introduction to appearing in Immigration Court. This is a general training for every pro bono interested in representing an unaccompanied child in the 2018 political and legal climate, including legal representation at the Newark Immigration court, Newark Asylum Office, and state family courts. It will also offer a brief primer on SIJS and asylum law, as well as tips and best practices for working with children in the legal context. In addition, the association's educational arm, the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education, will soon host a program on asylum and refugee law. The program will be held at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark on Sept. 28. Visit njicle.com soon to learn more.
