YLD pulls out all the stops with plans for a great year

Young lawyers have a lot to look forward to in 2016-2017 as the Young Lawyers Division announces plans for fun social and networking events, CLE seminars and more to help new attorneys take the right steps on the path to becoming a successful lawyer.

Coming events
In August, September and October, there are three gatherings where YLD members can have a great time, get together with colleagues, greet new YLD members, and be part of a community service initiative.

The Young Lawyers Division trains volunteers to work with the New Jersey Reentry Corporation (NJRC). Led by former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey, NJRC is a non-profit agency with a social mission to remove all barriers to employment for citizens returning from jail or prison. On Aug. 2, the NJRC is holding a Summer Barbecue to honor the service and leadership of U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo, Governor Brendan T. Byrne and former Commissioner Richard Constable at Liberty House in Jersey City. The Young Lawyers Division is given special recognition as a supporter of NJRC and is a cosponsor of the event. On Sept. 6, the Annual Kick-Off Barbecue for the division will be held at the New Jersey Law Center. If the NJRC Barbecue was a missed opportunity, young lawyers should make it to the annual kick-off event, since this the main planning meeting for the YLD year. Attendees can find out about the workings of the division, meet YLD leaders, learn about plans for the coming year, volunteer, get involved and share ideas for new initiatives.

The Annual Tailgate Party at the Far Hills Race Meet is set for Saturday, Oct. 15. The NJSBA’s young lawyers, fellow members and guests stake out their spot at the races for a great time every year. Tickets must be purchased through farhillsrace.org. The Young Lawyers Division will provide a shuttle from the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick, with an additional stop at the New Brunswick train station to Moorland Farms, and back. Connect with members in CommunityNET
CommunityNET is the social network for NJSBA members, and YLD members are taking it by storm. In the discussion forum in the past year, the YLD’s 2,893 members generated 2,081,335 discussion messages, replies and views. In the month of July alone, they generated 121,520 discussions. But YLD members can benefit not only from what the division offers, but also from the substantive sections based on areas of law. The YLD can get a young lawyer only so far, and then it’s time to find the experts, who are members of sections based on practice areas like land use, municipal court or civil trial practice, or family law. Watch a video here about the work of sections and committees.
